ST PAUL CENTRAL CROSS COUNTRY

ANNOUNCEMENTS/UPCOMING EVENTS

We hope this email finds you well, and well rested after MEA weekend! After a busy last week, we are heading into Sections, coming up on Wednesday morning. Here is the weekly update!

Conference Recap:

Tuesday at the Conference meet, we had an incredible showing! We saw many PRs, with our Girls team taking home 2nd, and the Boys taking 3rd. It was a picturesque fall day, with a wonderful team atmosphere, as we celebrated our last official meet all together for the season, and honored our wonderful seniors for all they have done this year!

You can find the results here

Photos can be found here

Section Meet:

The section meet is this Wednesday at Highland Park Golf Course again. This race is the qualifier for the State Meet, with us racing the Top 7 individuals on each side. Athletes who are running have been communicated with, as well as a handful of alternates.

To qualify for the state meet, you either need to be on one of the Top 2 scoring teams, or in the Top 6 after the 7 runners from each of the Top 2 teams are taken out. We usually have a handful of qualifiers from Central each year, so we are eager to see how the meet goes!

The bus will leave Central at 9:15am, with the Girls racing at 10:40, and the Boys racing at 11:30.

Practice Reminders:

We are entering the point in the season where athletes who are not racing at Sections can come to practice if they want, but it is optional. We highly suggest athletes to continue showing up for the community, fitness, and a good time! We will also be doing some time trial work for those who want to see if they can get one last PR this season.

**If you are running at Sections, you are expected to be at practice or communicate your absence. If you did not attend/communicate on Wednesday for our practice, or for Monday or Tuesday, you will not be racing at the Section race.**

Banquet:

Our end of season banquet is coming up on 11/14 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The event will be catered, and all are welcome to attend! If you have not already, please take a quick moment to fill out the Google form below to RSVP!

https://forms.gle/89zmDXu1uwRqvu726

Pasta Dinner:

The Pasta Dinner this week is on Monday, and all athletes are welcome! It is at Edward Gronau’s house, 860 Bartelmy Lane N. The theme is Musical artists/bands!

Uniforms:

For those who are not racing at Sections, we are going to have a uniform collection coming soon. We are finalizing the date for that now, but we always do a Costume run the same day! It’s a lot of fun, and we encourage all to show up!

Uniforms must be turned in, all pieces present and washed. If you have any questions, or have lost items, talk to JG!

As always please let us know if you have any questions! We are so grateful for this team, and your support!

Hello XC families,

We hope this email finds you well! The fall weather surely has arrived, just in time for some exciting last few meets! Below is the weekly update for this week!

Thundering Elk Invite Recap:

What a great job by our athletes at the Thundering Elk invite! We saw some amazing performances, as well as some wild weather and frequently changing conditions. As always, check out Madison K’s awesome photos at the link here!

Results from this meet can be found here. Please note that the results have yet to populate onto Athletic.net, where all of our other results have ended up. As the coaches work through to piece together our Varsity squads for Conference and Sections, we will make sure those times run at Thundering Elk are accounted for :)

This Week’s Training (and no meet!)

As we get closer to the end of the season, this week we do not have a meet. It will allow us to prepare for the St. Paul City Conference meet coming up next Tuesday (more details below).

Training this week will vary for the different members of our team, as for the majority of the team, Conference is the last official meet of the season. We will have a part of the team doing their “taper” towards conference, meaning the mileage and difficulty of workouts will decrease in order to give our bodies adequate rest for the conference meet. Those potentially running at Sections will delay their taper by a week. We will make sure to communicate with each runner at practice which training plan best suits their needs.

The Schedule for the next Few Weeks:

Tuesday 10/17: St. Paul City Conference Meet at Highland Park Golf Course

Click here to let the coaches know you are able to attend

Boys Varsity at 4, all Girls at 4:40, Boys JV at 5:20

**After Conference, practice is optional, but highly encouraged for those not running at Sections.

Thursday 10/19 and Friday 10/20: No official practice due to MEA break.

Wednesday 10/25: Section 4AAA Championship Meet at Highland Park Golf Course

Girls race at 10:40, Boys race at 11:30

Sections will include roughly 10 runners on each side, with 7 racing (the others will attend as alternates)

Saturday 11/4: MSHL State Championships at Les Bolstad Golf Course at the U of M

Qualification for the state meet is based on the section race. The top 2 teams at sections will qualify, and then the next 6 individuals will qualify as well.

Tuesday 11/14: Central XC Team banquet at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church

We are working out the logistics, but the evening will include dinner, mingling, coaches’ presentation, awards, and more! Attending the banquet is totally free, but we would LOVE if you could click the link here to RSVP with a loose estimate of how many people from your family will attend. That way, we can order enough food and account for dietary needs.

Attendance:

This is a reminder that we expect athletes to be communicating their absences to coaches, through GroupMe, email, or the absence link here. We are continually proud and supportive of our athletes’ many endeavors, but just like a job, ask that they communicate if they will be gone/late.

With the conference and section meets being our most important of the year, we are expecting athletes to let a coach know of their absence if they are hoping to run at those meets. Failure to let the coaches know of an absence could result in an athlete not being placed in the Varsity races or entered in the meets at all.

As always, we are here to help, so please let us know what we can do to helpful! We are so proud of this group!

As always, let us know how we can help! We are so grateful for all of you!

9/17 Weekly Update!

Waconia Invite Recap:

Through all the twists, turns, hills, and challenges, it was an incredible meet on Thursday at Crown College! We saw so many runners push themselves, teammates rely on each other for support, and some awesome first 5ks for some friends! All coaches are so incredibly grateful for those of you who stepped up to drive when it looked like that was our only option to get there. We couldn’t have done it without all of you!

Results, as well as (most) other results can be found on Athletic.net, a popular Cross Country and Track timing website. https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/meet/226946/info

If you happened to take any photos, please let Coach JG know by replying to this email!

This Week’s Meets: Griak and Mustang Invitational

For our meets this week, we will be splitting into two groups. Our Varsity squad is heading on Friday to Griak, a major race at the U of M golf course. All other runners will be participating on Saturday in the Mustang Invitational, an awesome meet that we love going to every year!

Griak:

As mentioned earlier, the Griak meet is only with our Varsity squad. The coaches were considering a wide variety of factors when creating our list of 10 runners for this meet, and those runners are listed below:

Boys: Henry B., Oliver B., Eric W., Edward G., Isaac R., Jason V., Atticus J., Aksel S., Jacob K., Alex M.

Girls: Katie N-B., Teagan O., Pria S., Halina T., Audrey K., Nora M., Alice R., Elsa L., Kaisa L., Lilian S.

We are currently awaiting word on which race we will be entered in. The U of M is waiting until all teams register to place teams in their Maroon and Gold races. Once we have that information, we will relay that on!  For Griak, we always will have a bus to the meet, but not one back. Those not running are welcome to join and watch, but we may not have space on the bus, depending on what vehicle the district provides us.

Mustang Invitational:

Our second meet is on Saturday morning, up at Chippewa Middle School. This meet is an awesome event, and we always see some really fast times from our runners here!

Bus leaves Central at 8:45am

10:20 AM - Girls Green 5000m Race (Unlimited entries)

11:00 AM - Boys Green 5000m Race (Unlimited entries)

12:10 PM - Boys Gold 5000m Race (10 entries maximum)

The form to sign up for this meet is linked below. As a reminder, athletes must RSVP to the meet using this form so we can accurately fill our races with those who will actually be coming. The form is due by Tuesday at 6:00pm

Nike Regionals Trip to South Dakota

Every year, the team does a trip to the Nike Regional Meet in South Dakota. Just like the Campout, this is an unofficial trip and meet, as it happens after the State meet and out of the team’s season. However, it’s a great chance for runners to run another 5k, and they always have a wonderful time traveling with their teammates! This year, the meet is on November 12th in Yankton, SD.

The last few years, Lizz Sable Stauning and Meg Gronau have been fearlessly leading the planning process (Coach JG will also be a part of this, but not on the trip). Given that both of their runners are seniors, we are looking for an adult with a runner in grades 7-11 who would be willing to help plan, while also learning about the process for next year.

If you are interested in helping out with the Nike planning, please reach out to JG!

Fundraiser/Donating to the Program

This week, we started our SnapRaise campaign, which helps the team purchase equipment, hire additional coaches, and more! SnapRaise has been incredibly helpful in fundraising for all Central sports programs as well. If you’re interested in spreading the word, donating through SnapRaise, or learning more about that process, click below!

https://raise.snap.app/donors/st-paul-central-cross-country-2023

You can also make a direct donation to the program if you would like! If you are interested in donating via check, you may write the check to Central Booster Club, with “Cross Country” in the Memo line.

Those checks can be given directly to JG, or mailed to

Alicia Ekegren/Central Athletics

275 Lexington Pkwy N

St. Paul, MN 55104

We are immensely grateful for any and all support you are able to donate to this program, so thank you!

St. Paul City 2 Mile

Great job to all those who ran at the St. Paul City 2 mile! Results can be found here

If you happened to take photos at the meet, let me know and I can add them to our team website! We appreciate any and all photo volunteers!

This week’s Practices:

To check out this week’s practice plans, click here. We are working hard to increase our mileage safely in the next few weeks, as our meets are all 5k races (3.1 miles) instead of 2 miles.

On Tuesday, we are going to have our SnapRaise rep come talk to our team about this year’s fundraising. Central Athletics works with SnapRaise, which is an outside organization, to help raise money across all sports. While this is optional, it allows us to raise significant amounts of money each year for meets, additional coaches, and more!

https://raise.snap.app/donors/st-paul-central-cross-country-2023?share_type=clipboard

This fundraiser is totally optional—if you are interested in donating to the program separate from SnapRaise, that’s totally fine—just email JG for the info on where to direct donations!

Meet of the Week: Waconia Wildcat Invite:

Our meet this week is on Thursday, at a new meet for Central XC, but one that should be a lot of fun! We will be racing on Thursday at Crown College. More information about the meet can be found here

Team Campout:

This coming Saturday-Sunday is our team campout! While this is an unofficial event, it’s an incredible opportunity for our team to build community.

If you are attending (signups were due Friday), here is the info you need to know!

-Meet at Central Saturday at 11:45am, leave at 12pm for Lake Elmo

-Bring snacks for Saturday afternoon and to share throughout the campout!

-Dinner and breakfast will be a part of the campout (with options for those with dietary needs as well!)

-Athletes should be talking amongst themselves to figure out who will be staying in which tents

-We have a six chaperones, and 21 parent drivers—so THANK YOU to those who volunteered!

-The group should return to Central around 12 on Sunday

Though this event is not an official Central event, it is important that athletes represent Central well, by being respectful of the chaperones, other guests camping at the park, and teammates. This includes trash pickup, noise levels at night, and overall behavior and decision making.

Any campout questions can be directed to Coach JG, or one of the captains, Pria (ideally via students on GroupMe, but also can email pstauning001@stpaul.k12.mn.us, or text (612)-757-5200.

It’s going to be an awesome week for our team! We have a lot of exciting things coming up, so make sure you keep in touch if you have any questions!

As we adjust to the school year, and the various stressors related to that, our training plan will shift slightly this week.

We will be doing easy runs and workouts without our watches Tuesday-Thursday, with our meet on Friday. Athletes can bring their watch, however we are not going to be using them like usual during practice.

*Stay tuned during the day Tuesday for any heat-related changes from the Central Athletics Office/Athletic Trainer*

Practice Absences and Attendance

As we have talked about, our goal is to support XC athletes as they balance academics, athletics, and other interests. We ask that if athletes are not able to make practice, to email/message a coach on GroupMe, or fill out the Google form below. The form is best to alert coaches to recurring absences (like a  music lesson every Tuesday).

This week’s Pasta Dinner is at Jacob King’s house, from 6-9pm on Thursday! The theme is “Favorite Fictional Character” and his address is 1596 Burg Avenue.

Middle School Runners:

The majority of our Middle School runners attend Hidden River, which has a bus that students can take to Central. Bus B drops students off at Iglehart and Oxford, a short walk from Central at 3:14pm. Students at other middle schools in SPPS should consult with Coach JG about a plan for getting students to practice/meets.

As always, let the coaches know if you have any questions!

8/27 Weekly Update!

**Reminder: practice for the rest of the season is Monday-Friday at 3:30pm since the Coaches JG and Coffin are back at school during the day

Family Meeting (Part 2):

Thank you to all who attended our family meeting last week! We did not have much interest in a second makeup meeting, however the coaches are happy to chat individually with families and go over the information covered!

If you would like to see the slides from the meeting, click here

Team Campout:

Every year, the captains organize a team campout! This year, the campout is happening on September 16th at Lake Elmo Park (where the meet was!)

Athletes will be given permission slips, which (along with the money for food) should be turned into the captains.

We need a few chaperones for this trip! If you are interested, please let Coach JG know! It’s a ton of fun!

Parent/Family GroupMe:

There has been a bit of interest in an XC Parent & family Group on GroupMe (or similar type of social media group) to communicate amongst each other. The Central Athletic office and SPPS Athletics dept. have advised that this be started by a parent volunteer, rather than a coach.

If you are interested in taking the lead on this group, please email Coach JG!

Pasta Dinner:

This week, the Pasta Dinner is hosted at Atticus James’ house on Wednesday (2 days before the meet). The address is 1253 Lincoln Avenue, and the theme is Vampires! #spooky

The pictures from last week’s Pasta Dinner looked incredible, we HIGHLY recommend all athletes try to attend this awesome team tradition and social event!

As always, our goal as coaches is to be as transparent, helpful, inclusive, and welcoming as possible. If there are any questions, please let us know!

8/20 Weekly Update

Week 1 Recap: It was a great week of practice, with both familiar and new faces! Over 85 students registered, with more everyday! Bear with us as we have a lot of moving pieces the first few weeks.

We capped the week off with a Mile Trial run, the results can be found here. It was great to see everyone push themselves and get a starting time for the season!

Beginning of Season Meeting: We will have a beginning of the season meeting for families on Wednesday August 23th at 7pm. This will be on Google Meet, and the link will be shared later. This is meant as a chance to help families connect with the team and coaching staff, and to go over important info for the season! (If you can’t attend, reply to the email, there may be interest for a second meeting!)

Week 2 Practice: This week, we will still practice at 8am at Central, meeting on the grass just north of the tennis courts. Most days, we will done by 9:30am. Starting 8/28 our practices will be at 3:30-5:15.

Cretin Derham Hall Invite:

**Bus leaves Central on the Marshall side at 7am, please be there 6:45am**

Our first meet is on Thursday morning at Lake Elmo Park Reserve. New this year, all Central XC runners must register for the meet through Google forms, which lets us know if they are planning to attend. This will help us to more effectively register athletes who are actually planning on being there, especially for the Varsity squad, which has a limit of 7 or 10 runners usually for each meet.

This week’s Google form for athletes to fill out can be found here . The deadline for the form is Monday 8/21 at 8pm. Students who do not fill out this form will not be entered in the meet.

This race offers 2 mile and 5k race options. The races will be starting at the following times:

8:30 AM Boys 5K - Runners 1-10 on team

9:00 AM Girls 5K - Runners 1-10 on team

9:30 AM Boys 5K - Runners 11 - ? (unlimited)

10:00 AM Girls 5K - Runners 11 - ? (unlimited)

10:40 AM Boys 3200m - Middle school, first year runners, others as appropriate

11:10 AM Girls 3200m - Middle school, first year runners, others as appropriate

We are working with the Central athletic office to make a digital Transportation waiver (compared to paper previous years) to allow families to take/pick up athletes from meets without riding the bus. Once we have that this week, we will send it out in another email and at the meeting on Wednesday night.

Uniforms:

On Friday at practice, we passed out uniforms. If you did not get a uniform, the athletic office will be open Monday 8/21 from 9-11am to distribute uniforms.

Pre-Meet Pasta Dinner:

A Central XC tradition is the Pre-Meet pasta dinner. This year, the pasta dinners will happen usually on the day before a meet. This is a super fun social event for the athletes, who look forward to bonding with their teammates, eating some pasta, and getting ready for the meet. This is historically an athlete-only event, with a different theme each week.

Our first pasta dinner is this Wednesday is at Halina Tompkins’ house, 595 Cromwell Avenue, from 6-8. (Yes, during the parent meeting—however we have gone over most of the information with the athletes).

Snacks for Thursday:

If you are interested in bringing any snacks or water bottles to share for the meet on Thursday, feel free to bring them with your athlete! We always appreciate it!

We will go over other ways you can support the program as well on Wednesday!

8/18 Mile Trial & Cretin Open Sign up

Great job to those who did the mile trial! It was awesome to see where everyone was at, the strength of this team, and their support of each other! Click here to see the results!

Our first meet, the Cretin Open is on 8/24 at Lake Elmo! More information will be posted here shortly, but athletes who want to run must sign up using the Google form linked here

We will be sending out our weekly email on Sunday evening with all the updates for this week! The email will be sent to all athletes registered, and the emails of their guardians/parents/family that were entered as part of the registration. Not on the email list? Click here to add your email!
